NorthC is expanding its presence in Switzerland with the development of a new data center at the Innovation Campus uptownBasel in Arlesheim. The agreement, announced this week, marks a significant deepening of the company’s existing partnership with uptownBasel and reflects the growing demand for infrastructure tailored to advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, diagnostics, and personalised medicine.
The facility, expected to be operational by mid-2027, will begin construction around 18 months after the required permits are secured. It represents an extension of NorthC’s decade-long collaboration with the innovation campus, which has positioned itself as a hub for medtech, Industry 4.0, and AI. The addition of the Arlesheim site will bring NorthC’s Swiss portfolio to five data centers, complementing its existing facilities in Münchenstein and reinforcing its role as a critical infrastructure provider in the Basel region.
Tech Companies, Research Institutions, Startups
The project will start with a first-phase development of 2,500 square meters, supported by a power capacity of 6 MVA. Sustainability is central to the design. The new data center will run entirely on renewable energy, with backup systems powered by green diesel, aligning with NorthC’s wider goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030. The facility will also incorporate energy recycling, with waste heat redirected to support residential heating in the surrounding area, an increasingly important feature as data centers face scrutiny over their energy use.
UptownBasel, where the facility will be located, has grown into a platform that unites technology companies, research institutions, and startups to foster innovation across disciplines ranging from medical technology to the future of work. By integrating a dedicated data center into this ecosystem, NorthC aims to strengthen the regional infrastructure required to attract talent, support early-stage ventures, and anchor advanced digital industries in Switzerland.
For NorthC, the investment underscores its strategic commitment to Switzerland as a location for innovation and as a market where demand for high-performance, sustainable digital infrastructure continues to grow. The company has emphasized its approach of combining scalability with a regional presence and a personalised service model, factors that have become increasingly relevant as businesses adopt more data-intensive technologies.
