DE-CIX, one of the world’s largest Internet Exchange (IX) operators, has become one of the first IX providers globally to secure Google Gold Verified Peering Provider (VPP) status. The achievement marks a significant milestone in global interconnection, highlighting the German-based company’s role in facilitating secure, resilient, and high-capacity connectivity to Google’s services.
For enterprises and service providers alike, the designation ensures that connectivity to Google’s global network can be delivered with greater reliability and lower latency, meeting the rising demands of digital-first business models.
The Google VPP program was developed to identify and endorse ISPs and IX operators with proven track records in delivering diverse, redundant, and highly available connections to Google infrastructure. For businesses consuming services such as Google Workspace, YouTube, Google Ads, or cloud workloads, choosing a VPP-certified partner reduces the complexity of managing direct peering connections while ensuring stringent technical standards are met. By working only with verified providers, Google enforces higher levels of redundancy and performance, guaranteeing that customers access its services through infrastructure optimized for resilience.
Through its Gold VPP designation, DE-CIX is now enabling access to Google prefixes via its peering services. The solution has already gone live in multiple regions, including the United States, India, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkiye, and across the Nordic markets, with further rollouts planned worldwide. DE-CIX customers currently operate thousands of Google peering sessions across these hubs, and the new arrangement ensures traffic is routed more efficiently, bypassing congestion on the public Internet. By doing so, businesses can achieve faster and more reliable performance across Google’s suite of services and cloud environments.
The development is particularly relevant for smaller ISPs and enterprises that do not meet Google’s stringent requirements for direct peering. DE-CIX’s service offers simplified Layer-3 connectivity to Google, providing uninterrupted access without the need for complex infrastructure investments. This means wholesale networks can leverage DE-CIX’s VPP status to extend secure and reliable access to their downstream customers, while enterprises gain a direct pathway to Google’s applications and workloads. For companies depending on mission-critical cloud services such as SASE (Secure Access Service Edge), collaboration tools, or content delivery, the benefits translate into more predictable performance and improved operational continuity.

Google Services via Trusted Networks
Dr. Thomas King, Chief Technology Officer at DE-CIX, described the achievement as both a technical milestone and a reflection of the company’s longstanding mission to simplify interconnection. “We are delighted to be one of the first IX operators globally to achieve Gold status as a Google VPP,” said Thomas King. “This development underscores our commitment to evolving interconnection services for the benefit of all networks, ensuring the world remains seamlessly connected.”
Google’s approach to peering has evolved to require providers with demonstrated expertise and sufficient redundancy to manage complex network connections at scale. With VPP-certified IX operators like DE-CIX, customers gain access to services through trusted infrastructure partners that meet Google’s rigorous standards. For Google, the program ensures uniform quality and security across its global ecosystem, while for businesses, it reduces the barriers to entry in adopting or scaling Google services with confidence.
The recognition comes as DE-CIX prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. Since launching its first Internet Exchange in Frankfurt in 1995, the company has expanded to offer interconnection services across 60 global locations, with accessibility from more than 600 cities worldwide.
Today, DE-CIX interconnects thousands of carriers, ISPs, content providers, and enterprise networks from more than 100 countries. Its Frankfurt exchange, handling close to 45 exabytes of annual data traffic and connecting nearly 1,100 networks, remains one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world. With its new Google VPP Gold status, DE-CIX reinforces its reputation for delivering “digital infrastructure made in Germany” to a global audience, ensuring businesses everywhere can meet the demands of an increasingly interconnected and cloud-driven economy.
