TL;DR: Heads up! We’re rolling out a new organization structure of our tutorials, courses, and guides, so that we can implement our new guide navigation. You may find the course navigation change at any time within the next couple of weeks. Use the “Was This Helpful?” form at the bottom of any tutorial to reach out if you need help or have a question.

Why are we doing this?

We want to:

  • Provide additional context about where you are within a course and how that relates to other content. Which should also make it easier to find related material.
  • Make it easier to scan large lists by providing an additional level of grouping.
  • Make it easier to navigate to another tutorial in the same guide

A little background

Since Drupal 8’s release, which ushered in a new object-oriented architecture, APIs, and features that have continued to evolve through Drupal 9 and 10, we’ve produced over 700 tutorials! That level of tutorial production introduced organization and navigation challenges that we have been working on behind the scenes for a long time. And we’ve heard your feedback that navigating our tutorials can be frustrating at times.

On its way to you: a new way to navigate tutorials

We’re excited to announce that we’re rolling out new navigation on tutorials and guides, so that you can know where you’re at both within a course and within a guide. We’ve been testing out this new navigation on a limited basis and are happy with the results. You can check it out now on the Drupal User Guide, the Module Developer Guide, and the Learn to Migrate to Drupal guide.

With this new navigation, you’ll be able to navigate to any tutorial within any course that’s part of a guide from a tutorial. In order to implement this feature, we’re simplifying the hierarchy of how our tutorials, courses, and guides are organized.

This means:

  • Courses will be more focused in their subject matter coverage.
  • Guides will focus on a skill set within a category, instead of broadly including all tutorials in a category or role.
  • A tutorial will only appear in 1 course. This means when you land on a tutorial from a search result, you’ll be able to see the course and guide context in the sidebar. This will allow you to to quickly navigate to a more appropriate starting point, based on your learning needs.

By organizing our tutorials, courses, and guides in a simplified hierarchy, you’ll be able to explore and learn skills that cross-over between categories, like learning how to output themeable content using Drupal’s Render API — regardless of if you’re working in a theme or module. Or learning command line tools like Drush — whether you’re approaching it from a site administration or developer perspective.

We hope this big change in how our site is organized will help you discover new learning paths and successfully fill the gaps in your Drupal knowledge and skills. And we hope you’ll be able to focus more on learning and less on feeling frustrated trying to find the right tutorial for you.

Need help?

As we roll out these changes, you may find your learning path change from under your feet. If you find yourself lost or disrupted, and need help finding the new path, please don’t hesitate to reach out using the “Was This Helpful?” form at the bottom of every tutorial.

Thank you in advance for your patience as we roll out these changes!
