Working for an all-remote company has ton of perks, and being able to work from anywhere with a stable (or sometimes not-so-stable) internet connection is one of the best parts.
It’s super fun to see some of the weird, unconventional, and cool places some of my co-workers check in from on a daily basis. Working remotely doesn’t mean you have to find something that resembles an office in order to get your work done. And here are some of the answers I got when I asked the team here at Skillcrush the coolest places they’d worked remotely from.
When Hillary Heinz first started working for Skillcrush, she would often take working lunches to go to her favorite Thai restaurant. Restaurants are actually a favorite among remote workers, though. Particularly the ones with good, free WiFi, plenty of power outlets, and tables big enough to spread out on a bit.
She’s regularly worked from campgrounds with good wi-fi while traveling around the country.
Kelli Smith, Skillcrush’s head of customer support, is really into the European line dancing scene (Yes! That’s a thing!) and has joined all team meetings and daily check-ins from parking lots while at competitions. One particularly memorable meeting was going great until the lights went out in the van she was sitting in and the whole company wondered if she’d been kidnapped!
If parking lots aren’t your thing, maybe moving vehicles are. Erin Denton, one of Skillcrush’s instructors, has worked nights from a car cruising down the highway. She’s also worked from a variety of airports and at both of her grandmothers’ houses (one while using her data plan since her grandma didn’t have internet!).
If vehicles, in general, aren’t your thing, maybe you’d rather take a page out of marketing team member Brian Swanick’s book. He spent three days working from a cabin in Yosemite National Park (there were deer roaming around behind him during meetings!) and even worked from a sandbar in the ocean.
Lizu Kabos, one of our super-talented designers, spent some time working from jungle bungalow in Thailand, complete with a view of the ocean! Talk about inspiring.
Curriculum writer Joni Trythall has worked from co-working spaces, coffee shops, and libraries, but one place beats out all the others when it comes to where she prefers to work. “My perfect scenario, however, is working outside as much as possible and I used to even have a work tree fort!”
Our Content Lead, Julia Sonenshein, has worked from campus while finishing up her Master’s Degree, and from the passenger seat of a car (complete with super glam sunglasses and sun hat). Here she is waiting for the rest of the team to join the meeting:
While national parks, cars, and jungle bungalows can all seem like surprising places to do your job from, our head of marketing, Hilary Fetter, might have worked from the coolest place of all: on top of a ridge while skiing in Montana. “I’ve taken like a dozen calls and lots of emails from that Ridge because it’s the only place there is service.”
And more recently, she worked from the front seat of a Winnebago while chaperoning a high school track team to their meet three states away.
Of course, even if you opt to work remotely from a more conventional co-working space, you may find some of the perks to be a bit more enticing than your standard office. Things like beer on tap between the office fridge and the modem, like there is at marketing team member Lauren Lang’s favorite co-working space.
