Vantage Invests €350M in New Sustainable Milan Data Center

Vantage Data Centers is deepening its commitment to Italy’s digital infrastructure with the announcement of a second hyperscale campus in Milan, reinforcing the city’s growing position as a European technology and connectivity hub. The global data center operator confirmed an investment exceeding €350 million (approximately $407 million USD) for the new MXP2 facility.

It’s a move by Vantage designed to meet the surging demand for scalable, high-performance computing power across cloud, AI and enterprise applications.

Situated in Castelletto, roughly 15 kilometers from central Milan, the new MXP2 campus will consist of two state-of-the-art data centers spanning about 10,000 square meters and providing 32 megawatts (MW) of critical IT capacity. The first phase of the build is expected to go live in spring 2026. This expansion complements Vantage’s existing MXP1 campus in Milan, further establishing the company’s foothold in one of Southern Europe’s fastest-growing digital corridors.

“Milan’s strategic connectivity and robust fiber infrastructure make it a crucial link in Europe’s data economy,” said David Howson, president for EMEA at Vantage Data Centers. “The city’s proximity to major terrestrial routes ensures low-latency connectivity to Zurich, Frankfurt and Munich, while the region’s competitive market and growing digital ecosystem create an ideal foundation for global hyperscale expansion. Our investment in MXP2 underscores Vantage’s commitment to delivering sustainable, world-class data center solutions that support the next generation of cloud and AI technologies.”

Italy’s Digital Transformation

Vantage’s continued investment in Italy is also being recognized at a national level. The company’s multi-campus developments were recently designated by the Italian government as “strategic infrastructure projects” under Article 13 of Decree Law 104/2023. This classification recognizes data centers as critical enablers of the country’s digital transformation and economic resilience. Through this program, Vantage plans to invest approximately €4 billion (about $4.6 billion USD) over the next eight years, creating around 4,000 construction jobs and 250 permanent positions once facilities are fully operational.

In a statement issued on October 2, the Italian Council of Ministers described Vantage’s initiative as being in the public interest, highlighting its role in “stimulating innovation, supporting economic growth, strengthening the country’s contribution to Europe’s energy transition and digital resilience, and fostering long-term research and development investment.”

For Vantage, this endorsement underscores its dual mission of driving digital transformation while contributing to sustainable economic development. “Vantage appreciates the recognition from the Italian government to be part of the growth engine powering the next generation of technology in my country,” said Alfonso Romano, vice president of site selection and acquisition, EMEA, at Vantage Data Centers. “Our investments not only enable digital transformation but also contribute to job creation, innovation, and sustainable opportunities for local communities.”

Sustainability is central to the MXP2 project. The campus will integrate seven types of nature-based solutions, including permeable surfaces, sustainable urban drainage systems, vertical greenery, rain gardens, infiltration basins and landscape integration for stormwater management. The site will also include a multi-species mitigation strip with trees and flowering meadows designed to enhance biodiversity and support phytoremediation – helping restore and sustain local ecological balance.

With the addition of MXP2, Vantage’s total Italian capacity will reach 96MW, positioning the company as a leading infrastructure provider for hyperscale and enterprise clients in the region. The investment comes amid accelerating demand for data processing power driven by AI, cloud computing and edge technologies.
