For many Americans, the perception of life in China is often clouded by misconceptions and stereotypical narratives. Yet, as I delve into my journey of relocating from the bustling streets of New York City to the vibrant modernity of Chengdu, I realize how diverse and complex life in China can be. My name is Elise Lightyear, and at 35 years old, I made the life-altering decision to move to China in 2019.
My story began in the heart of Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I grew up, before venturing to New York City after college. For an entire decade, I immersed myself in the high-paced world of reality TV production. While living in New York offered thrilling experiences, the relentless 70-hour work weeks drained my energy and spirit. I felt as if I was aging prematurely, experiencing the exhaustion of a 50-year-old while still navigating the dreams and aspirations of my twenties. One morning, a simple realization struck me: this was not the life I envisioned for myself. Fueled by a mix of anxiety and excitement, I pivoted my life’s trajectory and embarked on a journey to China.
The Leap into the Unknown
Moving to a new country, especially one on the other side of the globe, is a daunting prospect. My journey began with the daunting 15-hour flight, filled with uncertainty about my new life. There was fear—yes, fear of the unknown cuisine, apprehension about adapting to a teaching career, and the universal concern about forging new friendships. Yet, my excitement for what lay ahead overcame my trepidation. Chengdu, a city of over 20 million people, was about to become my new home.
Chengdu, often overshadowed by Beijing and Shanghai in international perceptions, is a modern metropolis rich in cultural heritage. It is famous for its spicy Sichuan cuisine, laid-back lifestyle, and friendly residents. Embracing this new culture was a transition that came with its unique set of challenges and rewards.
Cultural Adaptation and Life in Chengdu
In my role as a university teacher, I work only 18 hours a week, a stark contrast to the grueling hours I once logged in New York. Teaching freshman university students who are already proficient in English, I focus on developing their essay writing skills, allowing for creative expression in a supportive environment.
Getting around Chengdu presents no major hurdles. The city’s subway system is efficient, with signs and announcements in both Chinese and English, making it user-friendly for anyone unfamiliar with the local language. My daily commute results in minimal expenses—about $2 for a round trip, which is impressive by any standards. This financial advantage is one of many benefits of living in China, as my current yearly salary of $30,000 places me firmly in the upper-middle-class bracket.
For my three-bedroom apartment, located in the heart of Chengdu just a brief walk from the subway, I pay a mere $278 each month. The bustling housing market in the U.S. would be hard-pressed to compete with these prices. Not only that, but my employer covers half of my rent, showcasing the generous benefits often afforded to international teachers in China. In addition to housing, I’ve access to free healthcare insurance, a monthly subway allowance, and an annual flight allowance amounting to $1,200—financial intricacies most Americans would envy.
A Taste of Affordability
My grocery bills amount to around $75 each month, and dining out ranges from spending $60 for a meal at a familiar chain restaurant like Cheesecake Factory to just $2 for a delicious bowl of noodles from a local eatery. This cost-effective lifestyle means I can allocate funds towards savings, potentially setting aside $1,000 per month. This financial freedom is not just unprecedented; it’s liberating.
Living in Chengdu transcends the financial aspects; the city’s cultural vibrancy has enriched my life immeasurably. I’ve formed meaningful friendships with both locals and other expatriates while also gaining a deep appreciation for Sichuan culture, customs, and language. My travels throughout China have broadened my horizons further, showcasing how diverse and beautiful this country is.
Challenges of Living Abroad
Of course, life in an unfamiliar locale is not without its challenges. Homesickness is prevalent; there are days when I grapple with missing my family, friends, and the comforts of home. It’s a reminder that while embracing a new culture is rewarding, it can also be isolating. The homogeneity of Chinese society means I frequently attract attention as a woman of color. From daily encounters where locals point and comment, it’s a reminder of my distinctiveness in a place where most individuals look alike.
Yet, I see this acknowledgment as an opportunity for dialogue and understanding. Instead of retreating, I engage with curiosity and grace, forging connections that transcend language barriers. My experiences have taught me resilience and confidence, helping me grow into the person I am today. The skills I have developed through teaching and sharing experiences with diverse individuals have empowered me to navigate life in a new culture.
Future Aspirations
My journey in China is not just about adapting to a new place; it has also led to significant personal growth. The financial stability I’ve found allows me to plan for the future in ways I had never deemed possible while living in the U.S. Armed with my savings, I aspire to buy a small house on the beach in Mexico, a goal that feels realistic in the context of my experience in China. Moreover, I’m excited to make substantial progress in paying off my student loans—an endeavor many millennials view as an insurmountable challenge.
Living in Chengdu has been nothing short of transformative. It redefined my understanding of success, shifting the focus from merely surviving to truly thriving. So, while New York may have once embodied the phrase “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere,” I propose a new motto: “If you can thrive in China, you can flourish anywhere.”
This adventure continues to teach me about resilience, adaptability, and joy in the simplest of moments. As I navigate this compelling chapter of my life, I reflect on the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped me, enriched by both challenges and triumphs alike. What lies ahead remains uncertain, but with the lessons I’ve learned and the friendships I’ve forged, I am prepared for every new adventure.
